So, you’re sold on the idea of pizza ovens for outside in the garden, but how do you go about it? What are the advantages of a garden wood fired oven? Which garden oven is right for you? How do you install and protect your Fuego in the winter? This guide answers all your questions and more.
Rather than talking generically about garden pizza ovens, let’s concentrate on the ultimate garden oven…. Fuego wood fired pizza ovens for the garden.
Fuego pizza ovens are perfect for any garden because they are available in a wide range of sizes and are made by hand in Spain by artisan craftsmen. Strong, rustic and traditionally made, they are built to not only last, but also be highly heat efficient thanks to the clay they are made from which has incredible refractory properties.
The beauty of choosing a Fuego garden wood fired pizza oven is the ability to choose. You get to personalize it to not only your individual tastes and requirements, but also to the style of you garden and home.
The Fuego pizza oven is available in 6 sizes, ranging from 1 to 9 pizza capacity, and four key styles – Brick, Stone, Clasico and Mosaic. So, once you’ve decided on the size, you can then match its look to the style of your home. You can then personalise it even further with different doors, chimney’s, tools and accessories. The possibilities are almost endless.
Once you’ve decided on a garden wood fired pizza oven from Fuego, configured it to precisely your requirements and placed the order, you need to sit tight and wait for the big day of its arrival.
While you are waiting, you can decide whether to mount it on a purpose-built solid steel table stand or get a professional builder to create a bespoke structure of your own from either brick or stone. You can find installation instructions here.
When your garden oven arrives, delivery is to kerbside so you need to arrange for your oven to be moved to your preferred location.
Because Fuego garden pizza ovens are so heavy, they need to be machine-lifted as part of the installation process – you can find a local approved installer below.
As our climate is generally colder than that of Spain and we tend to have more rainfall than we would like, you will need to protect your Fuego wood fired pizza oven at certain times of the year, particularly in winter.
Generally, we recommend either having your Fuego garden wood fired pizza oven sited under a covered roof or pergola which will stop rain from coming into contact with it, however, a waterproof cover will work fine when not in use and especially in wetter weather.
Our ovens have been treated with a waterproof sealant. We do, however, recommend that you give the outer dome of our Clasico, Brick and Stone ovens a couple of coats of a clear waterproof sealant, once a year, to prolong its waterproofing.
Leaving a cover on garden pizza ovens all year round is also not recommended, as condensation can also build under the cover affecting any fire clay surfaces. Therefore, on dry days, you should take your cover off to allow the oven to breathe and air dry any excess moisture from the surface of the fire clay.
Fuego Garden pizza ovens are extremely heavy and can weigh anything from 650kg to 2 tonnes depending on the size you choose. Therefore, they need to be machine-lifted as part of the installation process.
Before delivery and installation, you need to design and build your garden kitchen with pizza oven in advance. You can either build your own bespoke structure to house your Fuego or choose a ready-made Fuego Pizza oven table stand made from steel and the correct size, with no building work required.
If you decide to build your own base or outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, due to the weight of the oven, you will need to build a stable and flat structure which is either double wall concrete, brick or stone and have concrete lintels on top to provide reinforcement.
Standard height for professional kitchen work surfaces is 900mm, so when building your outdoor kitchen, allow for the 60mm thickness of the Fuego oven’s concrete base.
For a sleeker look, you may wish to hide the concrete base of your Fuego oven with say a granite top that has been templated to the shape of your oven.
If in doubt about anything, we advise you to consult a professional builder. Click below to follow our installation guidelines.
